I got my mod done properly thanks to this forum help! :)

Step-by-step instructions:
1. SAE connector with built-in fuse hooked to battery (like Battery Tender charging cable).
2. 12v 4-pin automotive relay (usually rated 15A).
3. Wire tap from licence plate wire (red wire, postive) accessible from under passenger seat.
4. 12v accessory cable (like usb charger).
5. Connect all wires to relay:
a. Pin 87: #4 Pos wire
b. Pin 85: #1 & #4 Neg wires
c. Pin 30: #1 Pos wire
d. Pin 86: #3 wire

If done properly, your accessory will be powered when ignition switched on and vice versa.
Any issue, fuse on your SAE connector will blow and prevent short. No harm on your bike fuses (ie tail light).

This is the way

Thanks i want to be visible. Yes they can be used as turn signals i saw amber aka yellow ones also. I had these on a while they are good quality. Stick them with 3m tape they come with, wrap them down with electrical tape then use a hairdryer for a minute or 2 about an inch away, take off the electrical tape and they will stay in place.

I used tap connector (attached picture of the connector) on licence plate wire (red one) under passenger seat.

In my setup, that's the green wire connecting licence plate wire to relay as per my post #22:
12v accessories for Z400?

When there is power on licence plate wire (key turned on), it will trigger relay (click sound) to turn on your usb charger.

I read Z400 doesn't have 12v outlet for accessories like Ninja 400.

Anyone installed 12v accessories (ie usb charger, aux light) on Z400 that is not directly from battery?
Meaning it will be on when ignition switched on, and vice versa.

On my old bike, I tapped from horn cable which has it's own fuse. That way any issue only horn fuse will be blown.
I just installed a usb charger on my 2021 Z400. I tapped into the turn signal fuse (and replaced it with a 15 amp instead of the 10 that was in there) and used the ground that’s right below the fuse box. Was pretty easy running the wires down without removing the tank. Just the left side plastics.

installed this afternoon, so can’t say the longevity of this product yet, but here’s the usb charger I went with. Fits perfectly in the middle of the handlebar below the key. I flipped it down so it’s on the side facing me as to not get in the way of the key. I can post pictures later.

Use the voltage from your license plate light to activate a 12vdc relay. Fuse this at .25A . This is so if something goes wrong it won't take out one of the fuses on your bike. Use the relay to switch power from the battery to your accessories. Fuse it accordingly. Now you have switched, fused power.

Hmm, was looking for solutions to my phone battery dying on rides but I'm not sure I have the electrical skills to tackle this considering I'll need to add relays/fuses. I'll just use a power bank and take a break to charge the phone I suppose.

I've been using this for years on multiple bikes and have never had any problems. It just needs to be connected directly to the battery. Then you can use any charging cable you have for your phone and run it from the USB charger adapter up the the handle bars. Very simple solution if all you need is something to charge your phone.

The other advantage to this, of course, is that if you use a battery tender, this connection also hooks up the charger to your battery. You just remove the USB connector and plug in your battery tender.

Appreciate the heads up on this, this might be exactly what I need. I also picked up some bluetooth earbuds to pipe directions into my helmet. I figure that will allow me to turn my screen off and let me get more life out of my battery. I've just been looking at the map while riding but with the bright sun always overhead, you gotta keep screen brightness up and my battery dies after 4ish hours.

The Bluetooth earbuds (or helmet) are a good idea, anyway. I do the exact same thing. I turn the brightness of my phone all the way up, as well, for the same reasons. This will work well. I found a 4' cable for my phone, which seems to be a good length.

I was actually looking at this when I was looking at earbuds. I don't mind my helmet though, it's DOT and Snell rated and fits well and is reasonably comfortable. Earbuds get yanked out when taking the helmet off, so i'll have to be careful so I don't lose one or both. But sound quality is good and voices are clear. If it becomes annoying to use, I'll probably get a bluetooth helmet.
