I would really appreciate if someone could provide some advice, as I’ve had difficulty finding an answer online. I have a 2019 Z400. I recently changed the chain and sprockets for the first time (it’s at around 15,000 miles). After I got it all back together, I took it for a test ride.

Problems:
- When I turned on the bike, it showed I was in 6th gear.
- Starting moving from a stop, I could feel the engine “lugging” like it was in a higher gear?
- While the bike was in motion, I tried to shift and was unable to shift up or down. There was no give in the shift pedal to shift down (as it would feel if it was in first gear). There was some movement in the shift pedal to shift up, but it wouldn’t shift.
- I removed the shift lever from the shift shaft to access the engine sprocket cover
- The bike was in third gear before I started removing stuff (I know I know, normally it’s in first gear, but I was having issues removing the engine sprocket, so I was just trying what I could)
- New chains and sprocket are OEM, same teeth, etc.
- I aligned the shift lever clamp on the shift shaft as described in the manual (see below).
