Gregg at Spears had these springs Engineered to work like they are supposed too....
He had to ordered a minimum of 500 of them....
Glad he stuck his neck out for the good of the 400... Let's hope he doesn't get "stretched" too far........

Just installed the Spears spring and clutch engagement feels much better. I was not having any issues but, from the start, the clutch felt 'squishy' so thought I'd give this a shot. I'm in Australia and Spears wanted $150 to ship the $5 part - fortunately I was able to ship it to family members in the US and then have it sent to me for $5.

Anyone wanting to do this themselves/not want to wait for postage, I picked up a spring from Bunnings. Century Spring C-766 14.3mm x 76.2mm (9/16 x 3") and snipped off two coils.

Washer measurements - outer diameter for both needs to be 19mm or greater. Inner diameter for one 5mm, and inner diameter for the second 9mm (8-10mm prob still works fine).

Quality obviously won't be near as good as Spears or Norton's. This spring is only zinc plated. Works well for now though.
I do like the feel of the clutch after doing this.

So I am seeing two different springs:

Racing Clutch Springs Kit: Race Clutch Springs Heavy Duty Kit Kawasaki Ninja EX400 2018/2019
Kawasaki Clutch Assist Spring: Kawasaki Clutch Assist Spring Ninja EX400 2018/2019

What does each one do? I think the clutch assist spring is the one that will make the clutch have less play.

Which spring solves the most common problems? Which one should I order? I am having mis-shifts between 5th and 6th gear.

Also where did the discount on Spears shipping go? $10 shipping for a spring seems kind of excessive.

Thanks!

Why don't you support your forum vendor, Norton motorsports. You'll find answers here:

@atomic.... what caused your cable to Frey?

Does the cable rub against the spring when engaging and disengaging?

Now that the 2020 updated pull rod is out, does anyone still think that this part is still necessary to add?

Yes. The pull rod is only one of the problems. Cable spring provides feedback on your clutch adjustment, keeps the lever from flopping around when it's correctly adjusted with some slack, gives better feel of the engagement point, and makes sure that friction in the cable isn't applying any wear to your clutch. It does a lot of good for a $10 part, well worth it IMO.

I bought the Hot Bodies spring kit from STG:

You don't need to remove the rubber boot. STG gives you a great video. AND this is THE best cheap mod every 400 should have done. It should just be put on at all dealers and add the cost to your total.

It was a pretty easy install. My clutch was not even getting pulled back all the way into the mount arm. This fixes all the basic issues with the stock clutch.

Nice....Norton and Hot Bodies are the same, they are a partnership because when you buy anything from Norton's it ships with a Hotbodies invoice.

Also if you go to Ninja 400R.com, which is at Norton Motorsports, it directs you to Hot Bodies hosted site........just a little FYI, same price at STG and Norton........

I was at the dealer getting a bit, and looked at the 2020 clutch. Feels like they rectified this issue on the 2020 models.
