What action camera and mount do you use?

308 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Boo Stairs
Been a moto/dual sport rider for 30+ years. Just picked up a '20 N400 - my first sport bike. Would like to get an action camera (go pro). A few questions:

1. What does the community recommend? Go Pro?
2. What mount would you recommend?
3. Where would you recommend mounting? Center of windscreen? Top of helmet?

Thanks in advanc

I have insta360 x3. Debated the go pro but 360 view you can't beat. You can buy a motorcycle package deal
I have a GoPro Max. I don't really use the 360 feature as much anymore. I would definitely recommend helmet chin mount. Other views are GARBAGE. Just kidding, but I strongly favor chin mount. Lets you look where you want, dynamic with body position, immersive.

Tank mount or the sticks that come out the rear that give you a chase came view look kinda neat (ugly, but cool view). I used to use the tank mount but the bad thing about that is if I try to full tuck, I might run into the camera.

I use some super cheap one I got off of amazon for $30. I'm not creating professional videos. I use it as a dash cam in case of an accident. As long as it can prove my innocence in court, it did its job. Also, if it's stollen off the bike, I'm only out $30. Has worked well for a couple of years now. It came with a bunch of attachments and holders.

Link of cheap camera would be nice. 😁

I have never tried it but I just bought a Ride Tech chin mount to use with my son’s GoPro Hero 7. I don’t vlog or anything, just want to capture footage of my upcoming trip with my family

I used a $40-50 Yi camera in my car. I'm guesstimating he installed a 12v USB connector to the bike and have something similar connected?
An acquaintance has a camera that hooks up directly to the bike's battery and is very low profile. He has both front and rear view and it automatically turns on if movement is detected. I think that's pretty neat but may potentially drain the battery fast in certain environments. IIRC, he said it was about $250, and this was about.... 5 years ago.

This has proven to be a reliable camera with good video quality:

https://www.amazon.com/AKASO-Adjustable-Waterproof-Control-Accessories/dp/B07JR1XZ78?th=1

I found the sticky mounts let loose very quickly so I added this extra windshield and drilled a hole through it for a mount. I like the camera mounted to the bike so the bike's lean angle is shown in the vids.

That's the camera I bought at your suggestion and got 2 of them.
I have one in the truck for the clown that brake check me and I do the Hulk smash on his a$$ and call it his fault. 😂

I didn't want to use it on the bike even though there's a remote for turning it on plus the app is super complicated never getting it to work on my phone so like a loser so gave up. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I will second this suggestion.
They offer a version for a few bucks more with image stabilization.
For $70 I may not even turn around to try to retrieve mine should it fall off in the wrong situation.
I have had mine for 2 years, and for the money I spent I am pretty happy.
Audio isn't the best.
This is what you can expect:

@Bikenut has lots of street video too.

I have a GoPro 10 or 11 ? and got this mount:

Amazon.com : Magnetic Mount Base Stand Kit with Strong Ball Head for GoPro Hero Camera, DJI Osmo Action Camera, AKASO Action Camera, Insta360 Action Camera and More Camera & Device with a 1/4"-20 Thread : Electronics

I searched for a long time trying to find a way to mount the GoPro so that it would see the speedo and dash as well as the road/track. I almost used a chest mount but I liked this even better because it just sits on the tank. The magnet is super strong and there is a nice flat spot on the tank near the front. The magnet is also covered with a thin layer of rubber so it won't scratch. I don't think I have a picture of the setup - let me see. Here is the video from a track day:

I just checked on Amazon and it's so old and I guess from a no-name brand that the listing doesn't even exist anymore. It was $31 and that was in late 2018 when I bought it.

This was the title of the listing: "4K Underwater Action Camera,2'' HD Display,10m Built-in WiFi,16Mp,30fps,98ft,170° Wide-Angle Waterproof Camera with Sony Sensor.Portable Sports Camer"

Akaso makes some decent action cameras, similar to GoPro but lower priced.

GoPro is nice but i have an insta360. you can mount it to the helmet like a gopro or mount it just about anywhere with the clamp like the mirror, handle bars, the passenger foot pegs, or use the selfie stick thing and have it stick out the back like a drone view
