. . . The -1 / +3 will make me unstoppable, and I'll start racing zx6rs for pinks.
That statement is NOT a joke - IF you have a Delkevic full exhaust and 19 lb removed from the 400. I have both a Z400 and a 2008 ZX-6R. Per my performance modleing software, The 400 with Delkevic FULL exhaust and minus 19 lb, with a 175 lb rider who knows how to launch and shift properly, actually outaccelerates the ZX-6R to about 45 mph. Then the ZX-6R dominates after that. So, if you keep the races short, to just under 45mph, you CAN win. :)

Haha good to know. Yeah I've noted that happens quite often. Ppl with bigger bikes worried about over doing the gas so they arent the fastest off the line. To be fair, I'd probably be the same.
That does sound tempting. Maybe down the line!

Update: I do find myself shifting a tad more, but I don't mind that at all. But the great thing is my MPG has remained the same which is roughly 55 mpg. I've actually been doing a little more street miles as well.

Hi there! I've read through this entire thread, but my head is spinning with numbers. I want to do +3 in the rear like you did, Did you have all the CEL and gear indicator issues? Did you need a bigger chain? I race and ride track exclusively on my 400. I noticed Norton has the different front/rear sprocket an chain kits that come with a flash. I was hoping to just be able to do an aluminum Vortex 44T on the rear without changing the front or the chain. Is this possible to do?

@Tracy is correct from what I've heard. But I've also read that people got the CEL with just a +2. YMMV, but unlikely with +2. I was replacing the sprocket and chain together, so it wasn't an issue with me. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience to say if you'll need a new chain or not. Although depending on how much it was stretched, maybe you can get away with it until your next chain swap.

Regarding the CEL and gear issue, I didn't want to bother with the chance of running into it and clearing the codes, so I just preemptively shorted the wire. The safety feature is something that'll probably never catch me off guard due to the way I start my bike, so I didn't care about disabling that feature.

If you're going to end up doing mods to net more HP, I would probably stick with the stock gearing or just go +1 or 2 max in the rear. Don't want to hit max speed with spare power :) With +3, top speed is 118 according to the calculator. Fastest I've hit was 123 indicated on the speedo.

If you are running a diffrerent profile rear tire from the stock size, I would imagine it would make a difference in what gearing changes you could make without getting a CEL? Idk, but seems logical to me. Rolling circumference related maybe?

I have an aluminum +2 rear sprocket, NO CEL was triggered. I did go with a new chain and sprocket kit. The +2 would NOT fit with the stock chain. Definitely more kick in the low and mid range. Power wheelies are a little easier with this set up. My 400 is strictly track!

You can power wheelie the 400? I may try that sometime although I have stock power (but +3 rear sprocket). Sit back, chop throttle, yank and throttle? An acquaintance told me not to use the bar pull tip

Question for some of the people here more experienced than I when it comes to rear sprocket in terms of chain length and axle geometry (I'm still learning)

Next year after my warranty is up I'm considering doing the Norton ECU flash and velocity stacks. I do some highway on my work commute and I'd like to go slightly longer on the gearing. Would I be able to go -1 on the rear and keep the stock chain?

I want slightly more top end, less shifting in town, and lower rpm's on the freeway while cruising.

Yes, you can put a 40T sprocket on with the stock chain, even a 39T.

Alright so I could use some opinions on this. I currently use a 14/43 sprocket. Been running it a while and want to keep the rear sprocket and not have to change the chain length since I've riveted it. I know I can keep the 108 length if I got up in front to 15/43. I also at that gearing it won't throw a code... except I run a 160 60 rear... with a larger rear tire and now going a bit taller gear would that cause a code? Thoughts?
