I posted a comment on a legit seller's post, and got a message from a different member (who has sense deleted their account or renamed themselves) :

rbonechaser started a new conversation with you at Corbin seat
the seller is currently inactive on the forum but you can reach him on here: [email protected] cheers

If you get a message like this, or have someone who wants to connect with you at either the email above, or [email protected] DO NOT SEND THEM MONEY. Thankfully too many redflags were present so I didn't send a dime (claimed to only have zelle / cashapp -- reputable sellers should ALWAYS have paypal/venmo-- and wasn't able to send me a photo of a piece of paper with today's date on it next to the product).

Rubber side down friends, and no money down until the seller can prove worthy!

That's because you never lend money to family. You give it to them or you don't. Lending money to family is the 2nd most stupid thing you can do with them...
Every time someone I cared about, family or not, needed money and I had it I just gave it to them. Never asked for, expected, or required to be paid back. I figure helping people as best I can is why I'm on this earth.

Sending money to random people online and just hoping they will be honest is dumb.

Heck, most people can't even lend money to their family without getting ripped off.
I mean you kinda have to if you want to greatly expand your search and buy online. I've bought and sold lots of motorcycle parts online over the years. Would've never been able to do that without the options to send money online (like Paypal, which is all I've ever used for that). Never been ripped off, and never ripped off anyone in all of those transactions, and I would guess about 60-70% of them were done as "friends and family" so there's no protection from Paypal on that.

I tend to be the polar opposite, and just trust a buyer to do the right thing.
In my line of work(machining). I put in 5 or 6 figures of work in, then deliver to the customer, hoping to get paid in 30 days from the time I deliver what was promised.
I always like talking to a customer, it gives me a "feel" for who they are as a person.
I deliver consistently, and expect to be paid so.
Transactions matter to me! Especially that first time you interact with a new customer or supplier.

Paypal = reputable? LOL

Not in my experience.

I got scammed once via Paypal and though I begged Paypal to intervene, they refused. Fortunately my credit card had my back and I got my money back. Alas, that pissed off Paypal and they banned me.
How long ago and was it a "friends and family" transfer or an actual "business" purchase? As long as you use the Business purchase option, the buyer is basically always covered, and the Seller is usually always covered as well as long as they provide tracking. Maybe 5-10 years ago, or cheeping out and using "friends and family" which comes with no protection, but PayPal is pretty reputable for business transactions these days.

Thanks for making this post.

I'm the seller the scammer was trying to impersonate. As for buying/selling things online, I've been doing it off and on for 20 years and never had any real issues. Usually there are things to look out for (like in this case a different user than the seller sending a message).

Some people are scummy but in my experience most people aren't. In any case if anyone wants some SW-Motech bags or a Corbin saddle they're still available :D
