I have a 2019 Z400...are our keys chipped/have to match our bike and come from Kawi, or just a regular old "make a copy if they have the right physical fit?"

Highly unlikely the keys are chipped.
I see nothing on the key that tells me there's a resistive chip imbedded into the key and highly doubt Kawasaki would implement such a thing on a bike in this price range. 👍

Someone prove me wrong. 😂🫣

If I'm not mistaken, I think the key code number is needed to have a spare made at our through a Kawi dealer. If you have only one key and not the key code number, check with the dealer first anyway. Worst case is they say no.

You only need your VIN if you've lost your key. Otherwise all you need is the correct key blank, which you can find on Amazon or eBay super cheap. Don't waste your money at the dealer.
