The bars on the Ninja 400 appear to be on the high side so I'm picking a few rider who like to tuck will swap them out for some aftermarket ones.

Add any info you have onto this thread please.

The stock bars on the bike are clip on style as they are in two separate pieces that are 'clipped on'. As opposed to a one piece bar that is bolted to the top of the top yoke like an adventure bike.

Riders change the clip ons for various reasons but a change in height is most common or they want aluminium ones rather than the heavy OEM steel ones.

Have a read here: https://www.ninja400riders.com/forum/125-parts-accessories/1081-clip-ons-general-chat.html

Also search 'Woodcraft clip ons' and 'Vortex clip ons' as there are threads for both of these brands being the most common.

Clip ons

Speaking of clip ons, I just installed a set of Vortex clip ons for the 400. I took the bike around the block and I cloud feel some vibes in the clip ons. I never felt any vibes with the stock handle bars. The stockers are heavier for sure. I wasn’t expecting it but the vibes aren’t bad, just more noticeable. I will see how it feels this weekend after 2 track days at NCBIKE! Probably my last of the 2019 season.:crying:

Very sexy! Funnily enough I got the same ones. Yes I did notice a bit more vibe initially but i definitely don't now so must have got used to it quick.
Enjoy your final hit outs.

I was at T-Bolt last weekend and a N400 racer Erica? had her upper cut out around the clip ons. Looking at the TYGA bodywork it looks like they opened up the area in front of the clip ons to maybe allow true lower clip ons? Has any racers on this board seen N4s out there with the uppers cut out to accept lower clip ons then the WC or Vortex? I may get the dremel out. What do you see out there SBK at your races?

You hit the nail on the head, they did the cut out so the bars can be lower and wider. Even with the stock body work the after market bars are lower but not as low with track plastics. I still have the stock plastics for now with the Vortex clip ons and rearsets. I was dragging the stock rearsets and my toes in certain turns. Now the 400 has a more sport bike stance and I am no longer dragging foot pegs. I will be going with track plastics next season.

even with my track body work I still can't use LOW clip-ons. I have them. Maybe I'll try again with the drexel in my hand. She did not have TYGA. It looked obviously like track bodywork. Not OEM. I still think even with the WC specific clip ons I still sit too high as compared to my GSX-R
I had to lower the area under the clip ons on my SV racer. I found using a emery flap disc on a angle grinder was the easiest way to take a good amount of material off and keep it looking neat at the same time. ie easy to do tidy scallops rather than ending up with a wavy edge.

yes unfortunately going with anything less than 2' risers positioned under the upper trips you will have issues with clearance.....looks like only a few companies are catering to true race clip ons so modifying OEM plastic or race trim AND using a race steering lock will be necessary for the above average rider..i will be posting photos of my new Lacomoto bodywork from Spears within the next few days and I will include the problem areas with the clip ons with OE plastic and the new bodywork....i did have issues with hotbodies with clearance issues

Are there any aftermarket clip ons for the N400 that allow close to stock clip on positioning but allow adjustment for track to get a proper lean angle? Im a shorter guy, around 5'6 and since this is my commuter I don't want it to be too aggressive for daily, but at the same token I will be starting to do some track events in the coming months and noticed last weekend on a mini track how annoying the stock bars are, especially when trying to keep your elbows flat instead of feeling like your pushing down on the bars.

Also is it indeed true at this point that all the aftermarket clip ons reduce turning radius substantially?

They’re adjustable, so how much turning radius you want (or don’t want) to give up is up to you. The way I have my Woodcraft clip-ons adjusted, I can turn my bars lock to lock, and the brake lever on my HC1 MC will just touch the edge of my Spears windscreen.

Anyone commute with the woodcrafts and care to share feedback? Especially the shorter guys. From what I just read on this thread, even the woodcrafts don't seem to go super low, so would you all say the change from stock is still less than say stock bars on a ZX6R? I sat on a ZX6 the other day in a showroom and it didn't seem bad honestly. Especially commuting with a backpack that gets in the way sometimes sitting upright lol.

I am attending a track school next month and feel the stock bars are limiting me from maintaining a proper posture when cornering so I feel clip ons would definitely help here.

My forks are also raised about 3/4" in the triple clamps and I don't mind the look now, but it sounds like these will expose another inch of the tubes? Not a deal breaker, just want to know what I'm getting into.

Also, when adjusted to stock angle with the 12" bars, are these roughly the same width? My garage has a very narrow exit and just want to make sure I can continue to clear it each day. Lol

You can adjust the width to however you want by just sliding the bar in further. I have them almost all the way out and it’s a little wider than the stock bars. They are fine to commute with and I’m only 5foot 6in. Still not as low as the OEM clipons on a stock zx6r.

For those of you having issues with bodywork getting hit. If you just need a little bit of clearance, stick a bit of aluminum on the stops with 3M tape. If you need more, some companies sell aftermarket steering stops. I bought the Graves, it requires you drill a hole in the stock stop. Others make ones you don’t need to drill holes. If it is a commuter bike, make sure you don’t need a ton of steering lock to lock, if you ride a lot with the bike on the steering stops, this mod ain’t for you.

I installed a set of Amazon clip ons. They sit 6mm lower than stock. Although the degree in drop is more than stock, I don't have a measurement for it, but the bar ends sit around 12-15mm lower. They came pre-drilled which saved me some time trying to measure and drill holes for the controls. The only slight problem I see is that the clamps don't sit flush with the fork tubes. There is a 5mm space left over, but there is still plenty of clamping room that was used. Install was easy and since the drop wasn't much, there are no clearance issues with the body. I used a ton of blue thread lock so nothing falls apart while I'm riding. Now I'm just waiting on my weighted bar ends and grips to arrive so I can install them. I haven't gone on a ride yet with them, so I'm not knowledged on the vibrations yet, but they feel really good. Slight more aggressive stance compared to stock.

I had the same issue with the Vortex clip ons. To get around this you move the forks up in the triple clamps until you have 5mm more fork tube sticking out of the top yoke. Then move the clip ons down until they sit flush with the top of the fork caps.
This job is best done with the front wheel out and the front of the bike supported by a front stand that lifts from under the steering stem. Then you can adjust each fork individually in an unloaded and controlled manner.
Alternatively you can do it in a more precarious manner by just backing off the triple clamp bolts slowly and carefully until the forks JUST start to slide when you tap the top yoke with a rubber hammer. But if they slide too far it's a $hit of a job to get them back up again, esp by yourself. Don't ask how I know!

So I installed woodcraft clip ons to the 400 last weekend. Install went well, not too hard, just time consuming as it was the first time I took this stuff apart. I had the bars about 15-20 degrees further out than stock, and the risers having about a half an inch gap between the top of the clamp and the bottom of the triple. Much better positioning. Then I installed ASV levers..... bye bye great positioning... the point where the lever spring is, sticks much further out than the stock levers where that spring doesn’t exist. So when I swapped them they contacted the body work so I had to readjust the bars and I lost so much space. I had to move the cla back up to touching the triple and the angle is back to stock.

Not sure if I’ll be keeping the ASVs or not. Anyone else run into this issue with some adjustable levers but have a fix with other levers?

where it’s contacting is on the black plastic body work that goes up to a point by the windscreen. Not sure if you can buy an aftermarket piece there that will eliminate that bump where the contact is being had.

I can get pictures up in a day or so if anyone is confused about the places and parts I’m discussing.

Other than that issue, loving the clip ons and the levers!

I can’t locate the stock MC right now, maybe some pics of the HC1 will help. The firs pics are with the lever adjustment all the way out, and the last two are 5 clicks in
Thanks for this! Just did a rough measurement based on what you posted and I think this is JUST going to clear. Only contact will be at full lock if anything when I have to use the steering lock. Normal day to day should not pose a problem I'd imagine.

Also, how far is 5 clicks in? Were there a lot to go? I have small hands so I wouldnt be surprised if I set it there or even closer. Just wanted a rough idea before I commit. Thanks!
